Toll Group, Australia's largest carrier, utilizes FACTS2000®,
a Progress®-based transportation freight accounting and tracking
system developed by Carrier Logistics Inc. (CLI). Based in Tarrytown,
New York, CLI is a Progress Software ISV specializing in the development
of advanced software solutions for the transportation industry.
FACTS2000 was designed to improve customer service and increase
productivity for multi-service carriers by bundling routing and
dispatch capabilities with billing and administrative functionality
- all in one complete system. FACTS2000 incorporates computer-assisted
truck routing, mobile data communications, and resource planning
and management and is a combination of CLI's existing FACTS and
ROUTRONICS® products.
"FACTS2000 covers everything from freight pick-up and delivery
to general ledger," comments Kenneth Weinberg, Vice President
of CLI." It is the most advanced, totally integrated, flexible
transportation system available to the trucking industry today."
"FACTS2000 is a total transportation system especially suited
for the complex, growing, and fast-changing logistics environment,"
continues Weinberg. "The system is designed to insure accurate,
timely pick-ups, deliveries, and freight-tracking, in addition to
the administrative functions of automatic rate quotations, billing,
and accounts receivable."
"Since we developed the solution in Progress we know we are
providing our customers with a non-proprietary, open architecture
and Web-enabled platform that can accommodate future system enhancements,"
says Weinberg.
Founded in 1888, Toll Group is the largest integrated multi-service
carrier in Australia. With sales of more than $1.3 billion (Australian)
as of June 1999, Toll offers a variety of transport services, including
longhaul, less-than-truckload, truckload, overnight, and parcel
delivery, and specialized refrigerated services. The company also
provides warehousing, distribution, inventory management, and logistics,
as well as rail and sea services.
Toll Group has grown 275% over the past two years, due largely
to a series of mergers and acquisitions and the implementation of
technologically advanced integrated logistics. Following the recent
acquisition of TNT's and Mayne Nickless's Australian transport assets,
Toll Group installed the new FACTS2000 system to unify and manage
operations and administrative functions for its entire transportation
network.
"The system is designed so that it can be easily upgraded
to accommodate Toll's continuing growth, which currently exceeds
1,000 dispatchers, drivers, and administrative personnel,"
adds Weinberg.
"The use of a single standard freight operations and administrative
solution will enable us to streamline and replace the various incompatible
systems we inherited through our acquisition of other carriers,"
remarks Paul Little, Toll's managing director. "Using FACTS2000
will also facilitate the sharing of pick-up, delivery, tracing,
and financial information within Toll's vast network of suppliers
and customers."
Regarding the technology behind FACTS2000, Little comments, "We
are impressed by Progress's reliability, speed, high performance,
and user friendliness. Progress also gives us the flexibility to
custom -develop and modify applications to fit the individual needs
of our customers and support them in pursuing new business opportunities."
"The trends toward fresh food delivery, Internet shopping
and just-in-time manufacturing have led to a shift away form conventional
methods of retailing, warehousing, and distribution, and prompted
our customers and their suppliers to reduce their inventory and
replenish stock quickly." Little concludes, "Customers
now require smaller deliveries more often, the ability to track
product at all stages, and reliable pick-up and delivery schedules.
With FACTS2000 and the underlying Progress technology, we'll be
able to offer all those services more cost effectively."
